Snoring

Snoring currently affects 1 in 4 Canadians, varying in severity from patient to patient. And while snoring may be common, it may be the cause of an underlying medical condition. Snoring also impacts more than just your quality of sleep and your daily routines, it can also have an impact on your loved ones in the same way.

What causes snoring?
Snoring is typically caused by the relaxation of the muscles and soft tissues in the back of the throat and mouth, although it can also be caused by improper teeth and jaw alignment. Snoring itself is the sound caused by the vibrating soft tissues when there is a decrease in the airway space, making it difficult to breath. Other causes of snoring include excess body weight, alcohol consumption, certain sleep aides or sedatives, and Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

What is the Manibular Advancement Device?
Manibular Advancement Device (MAD), is an appliance that is designed to keep the lower jaw in a forward position, increasing space in your airway. The device is quite comfortable, so much so that you can sleep without even noticing you are wearing it. Although, slight stiffness of the jaw should be expected for the first few mornings, this is temporary and will subside as you become more comfortable with the device.
